5 Things Hosting an Exchange Student Teaches Your Kids -
  1. Curiosity about the world as a whole, other cultures, traditions and ways of life

Kids are often curious by nature but the old adage is true: You don’t know what you don’t know. Hearing stories from exchange siblings about their school activities, holidays, and family weekend adventures can open up a new realm of curiosity for your kids. Learning about how other kids live creates empathy and understanding on a level that just can’t be taught in a textbook and sticks with your child for life.

  1. Leadership & Responsibility

Even tasks we see as simple could mean so much to your child’s growth. Showing their new exchange sibling around the school, teaching them how to navigate the transportation system, even just explaining your home chore chart allows your child to share their knowledge and puts them in a natural mentoring role.

  1. Patience

Until someone is brand new in a situation- you don’t even realize how even simple activities can be confusing. Your kids will learn to slow down, explain plans and processes better, and ask more questions to be helpful to their new exchange sibling.

  1. Problem-Solving Skills and Flexibility

Though our exchange students often come here with many years of English education, at some point there is bound to be a language barrier or cultural misunderstanding. Your kids will have opportunities to work through these challenges with their exchange sibling and find creative ways to adapt to their new normal.

  1. A New Definition of Family

What a gift for your kids to realize that family isn’t just what you’re born into- it’s who you choose to love and care for! Many of our host families form deep bonds and keep in touch with their exchange students long after their school year. Even visit them in their home countries for big life events and special occasions.

While hosting is a lot about what you can provide for a visiting student in terms of a safe, supportive environment, it is also about what your family ultimately receives by participating wholeheartedly in the experience of cultural exchange. Is this the year your family says yes to sharing your world and growing your own perspective? We’re here to walk you through the process- fill out the form below and we’ll reach out!
