A Special Bond Between Host Brothers -

At STS Foundation, our host families come in all shapes and sizes. From empty nesters to families with a full house, there are so many wonderful connections made when you welcome an exchange student into your home. For the Ford family in Michigan, hosting was always in the back of their mind, but it wasn’t until this year that it felt like the right fit. With their teenage son now the only child in the home, they decided there was no better time to give him the gift of an international brother.

“I was first made aware of STS Foundation when a friend of mine reached out to us asking if we'd have any interest in hosting a student. I had wanted to explore this for a while, but my husband wasn't completely sold. I had a student stay with my family when I was in high school, so I've always had the thought to do it again.

Our daughter had been out of the house, away at college the previous year, leaving our 16-year-old son as an only child at home. When Lukas's profile was shared with us, we noticed his interests, especially the desire to play hockey, fit well with our family. After about a week of conversation, we filled out the host family application, went through with the interview, celebrated being matched with Lukas, then crossed our fingers and hoped for the best!

We met just once with Lukas and his family during the summer in a video call. We were so impressed with all of them, especially Lukas. They were so easy to talk to and seemed like amazing people. Lukas and Grant texted via Snapchat a lot! I feel like we got most of our updates about Lukas through Grant. The fact that the two of them were chatting so much was really exciting, we loved that they were connecting so well.

Since Lukas’s arrival, Grant and him have become extremely close. They do a lot together but respect each other’s space and independence at the same time. Watching them together is truly amazing. They act like brothers and best friends. I love the laughter and banter that fills the house when they are hanging out. Even when Grant isn’t here for Lukas to spend time with, he enjoys playing games with us and has taught us a fun Norwegian card game that we all love playing.

This experience has been exceptional. The match with Lukas was perfect! We have enjoyed sharing day-to-day experiences with him in quiet Mason, Michigan. He's enjoyed visiting the local ice cream shops and walking around our little town. He has made some great friends at school and attends a lot of social and sporting events with friends in the evenings. We have been able show him a little bit of Michigan so far- he's already seen 3 of Michigan's 5 Great Lakes!

He is embracing life in the United States, and we are all making so many memories. When things were finalized, I was so worried that we wouldn't be enough fun or give him a good experience. Now, I am already worried about how hard it will be to say goodbye. We love having Lukas living with us!”

Thank you to host mom Cortney for showing us just how fast your exchange student becomes a permanent part of your family! The bonds made through cultural exchange teach us that no matter how many oceans are between us, we can always find common ground, and build a connection that can last a lifetime. Have you always been curious about hosting but haven’t been ready until now? Join the fun today and be matched with your future international family member!
