Cultural Exchange Benefits Everyone -

When you join the thousands of American families who welcome exchange students into their hearts and homes each year, there’s a good chance you may end up also becoming a Local Coordinator! Once you see all the amazing things cultural exchange has to offer, it’s hard not to join in the fun and help make other students’ dreams come true. This is true for Carleta Currie, a Local Coordinator in northwest Arkansas who started her journey as a host mom and teacher. Through hosting and coordinating, Carleta has seen how amazing cultural exchange is for everyone involved.

“At the end of the school year 2015, I received an email that had been shared by another teacher about needing host families. After reading the information and discussing it with our daughter, who was in her first year at high school, we contacted the Local Coordinator (LC). I then became an LC when the organization I was with contacted me to see if I would take over supervising a group of students.

Through hosting, we have learned so much about the different countries’ cultures, food, music, and their family life. Because of our students, we have been able to make new friends not only here in Northwest Arkansas, but we have also been able to travel to their countries to meet their families for the first time.

We now have extended family in many different countries in Europe and Brazil. We have stayed with our students’ families and eaten food that we would never have tried here in the U.S. Our eyes have literally been opened to the world outside of the U.S.

In turn, we have shown our students what it is like to be part of an American family. They get to experience the ups and downs that families go through such as a tornado going through the city and damaging their host family’s friend’s homes, which is sometimes common in our part of the country. They have helped the host family clean up debris at the friend’s home and have made such a positive impact in these moments.

As an educator, I have also seen the positive impact our schools have on these students. We have several students who took psychology courses and decided to choose that as their future career. We have a student who decided to go into elementary education, one that became a psychiatrist, another who decided to go into physical therapy due to a medical course she took.

The memories are many, meeting the young girl who has flown half way around the world who is unsure, scared, or whatever and taking them into your arms to let them cry for a bit. Sitting at the dinner table one or two hours after eating because we are talking as a family about anything and everything, laughing the whole time. Taking them for ice cream only to discover that a small ice cream cone is the size of a very large ice cream cone. Trying new American foods and seeing their eyes light up over the fact they can get free refills with their sodas. We are still making memories when we get to meet their natural parents for the first time. Knowing that they will be your family and you will be theirs for the rest of your life is as the saying goes ‘PRICELESS.’ We have 13 daughters from other mothers and our own daughter. They grew in our heart while they were with us and they continue to grow in our heart as we keep in touch with them almost daily.”

When you join the exchange community as a host parent, Local Coordinator, or both, you quickly see that our program benefits everyone! Our exchange students learn so much from everyone they meet, and in turn, they share their own cultures and gifts with everyday Americans. Together, we’re creating a kinder, more accepting world. Join the fun today!
