Discovering The Texas Life -

Each year, thousands of exchange students from around the world patiently wait to hear that they have a host family in the USA ready to open their hearts and homes to them. When you host an exchange student, you have the opportunity to teach an excited young person what life is really like here in the USA. Our students have an eagerness to learn and soak in all they can while on their ten month program. For Noa from Spain, she shares why she always wanted to come to the USA, and all the things she’s learned from her host family so far.

“Hello, everyone! My name is Noa, and I am an exchange student in White Oak, Texas. I am finally living my dream. I always wanted to be a student in the United States because I love its culture and history, and, let's face it, American high school movies.

I've been here for almost three months now, and I couldn't be more grateful to my host family for giving me the opportunity to be able to help make my dream come true with them. As soon as they sent me the details of my host family (you can't imagine how exciting it is to receive an email with the details of your host family), I opened my phone and discovered that my host family would be the Pyles, from White Oak.

I couldn’t wait to thank them for this wonderful opportunity. I decided to contact them, and from then on, we began to communicate regularly. They are wonderful, and from the very first moment, they made me feel like one of the family. I loved discovering that, like me, they are super organized and very, very active, sharing with me their plans for me. Imagine my excitement—I was still in Spain, and they were already counting on me for countless adventures!

As soon as I landed in Texas, even though I was very nervous, seeing Kayla (my host mom), JaeLynn (my host sister), Koltyn and Kayce (my host brothers), and Michael, my host father, who was away for work, I knew I had the best host family. That first hug with them made me even more certain that we would have a very special connection. And this adventure is new for them too, as it’s the first time they’ve hosted an exchange student. It’s an honor for me!

The Pyles are a young family with lots of energy. They are very active, and we share interests that have brought us even closer together. Jae plays volleyball and basketball (like me), and Koltyn and Kacey play flag football (although they will be starting different sports next season). I love going to watch them play and cheer them on.

I share a room with Jae, who is already 13 years old, and I couldn't be more grateful for that. We share laughter, conversations, and tastes in movies and music. We have a wonderful relationship; she is the best host sister anyone could have. We love playing basketball against Michael, and I have to say that he can't beat us. She has taught me that even though I am far from home, from Spain, I have been able to meet my soul sister, who has welcomed me and helped me cope with this change much better.

Since I love to cook, I’ve taught them some typical Spanish recipes, such as gazpacho, and I’ve also cooked my signature dish, pasta carbonara. I especially remember when I made a Tres Leches cake for Michael’s birthday. Koltyn kept coming over to hug me, and Kayce helped me make the cake.

They are a little whirlwind, and I couldn’t love them more. I love the afternoons we spend playing in the park, when they come to hug you just because they feel like it, their flag football games (I’m their biggest fan), when we play Monopoly or any other game you can imagine, and also when we’re in the car and we sing our hearts out. They make me smile and have made my adjustment much easier.

We talk about the differences between Spain and the United States. I love explaining things that are different for me, such as high school, since I finish at 4 p.m. here and at 5 p.m. in Spain. Also, there are so many things you can do here, like clubs. They have encouraged me to try new things and not be afraid to give things a shot, to never give up. Let me give you an example. I decided to sign up for Future Farmers of America (FFA), specifically Spanish Creed. Michael was at my first competition to cheer me on (Kayla was away on a business trip). Who would have thought that in my second competition, I would come in third out of twenty? Who would have thought a year ago that I would belong to FFA… well, I’m so happy! They help me a lot, and you should have seen their reaction when I told them I came in third!

I can't thank Kayla and Michael enough for welcoming me into their family. We have a great relationship and have even talked about the future, college... They have taught me to open my heart to new people. They have done that with me and have made being away from my family and my comfort zone not so hard and saying yes to new things easier. They have helped me adapt to my new situation and made me see that with desire and willpower, anything can be achieved. I know they will always be there for me, and that I can count on them and their advice for anything I need.

They have taken me to see new places and do scavenger hunts in different cities. So far, we have done two, one in Tyler and another in Shreveport. It’s great because we also get to see new cities. They include me in all their plans as one of the family. They introduced me to their friends in the neighborhood and welcomed me as one of the Pyles, for which I am very grateful.

Do you know what was an unforgettable moment for me? When my coordinator, April (the best, without a doubt), took us to a line dancing class. It was amazing to share that moment with Kayla, Michael, and Jae. They also met while line dancing, which brought back lots of memories for them! Another special moment: girls’ time with Kayla and Jae to go dress shopping for a gala dance we have in a few days… not to mention decorating Halloween pumpkins together (we don’t do that in Spain, and it was a really fun and special moment). When Kayla and Michael surprised us with the news that we were going to see an NBA game in Dallas (we are huge basketball fans!!!), they announced it in such a fun and original way!

Well, I could tell you so much more, and this is just the beginning, as we still have a long way to go in this wonderful experience.

To future students and host families, I would say don’t be afraid to try this experience. In my case, it’s been way better than I ever imagined. My host family are a mainstay in making this happen. They are with me every step of the way, and I can’t thank them enough for that. It is an honor for me that they chose me to be their first exchange student. They have taught me that opening your heart to others and being generous can only bring you joy!”
