From First to Next: A Host Mom’s Exchange Journey -

If you have ever hosted an exchange student, you may think to yourself, “I love my exchange student so much, I couldn’t possibly replace them and host again.” In reality, each time you host, you are giving yourself the gift of a new adventure! Sure, exchange students have a lot in common: their love for American culture, their curiosity and willingness to try new things, but each student is special in their own way, and each one will have their own beautiful journey with your family. Host mom Jana talks to us about how her first hosting experience helped bring her family out of their shell, and how those experiences will shape their time with their next exchange student!

Tell us about your family and why you decided to host!

We live in the country on a small farm in Missouri. We are active with the church and very close to our family members. My husband and I have talked about the idea of hosting for several years. Then my oldest son graduated and moved out, my twins were finishing their sophomore year, and we had an open bedroom. So we just decided to go for it! I had seen advertisements on Facebook for STS Foundation.

Pietro and Stockstill HF(2)

What are some fun memories that stick out to you from your time hosting Pietro?

Pietro is terrified of roller coasters, and we were able to get him on one at Silver Dollar City that went upside down multiple times... he said "never again!" And he kept his word. We took Pietro snow skiing in Colorado. He said it was his favorite thing we did with him. So we will do it again with Yannick. I always ask my kids "how was your day?" It drove Pietro crazy that I was such an involved mom. So now I message him on the app and continue to "mother" him.

What made you decide to host again?

We learned a lot in what to do and what to not do. We had a great first experience, and we think the 2nd time will be even better because we know more about hosting. One of my twins really blossomed having Pietro here. I believe it helped my family become more social. So with my twins being seniors this year, we wanted to host again.

How long since you first connected with Yannick, and how has it been getting to know him virtually?

Oh my! We connected several months ago. We have a group chat on WhatsApp that includes my husband and sons, and Yannick’s Family. We share pics of all the things we have been up to. We send happy birthday and happy holiday messages. But getting connected early and communicating, I believe he will be more comfortable when he arrives (less awkward for him). We have loved sharing with his family!

What have you learned about Yannick so far? How has that helped you prepare for his arrival?

With his interest in baseball, I reached out to the coach and the two of them have connected on WhatsApp. He has shared some of his country’s holidays and traditions, and this has helped us learn more about him. I am making sure I have a couple of school t-shirts here for him so that he can wear them to school if he wants, and they will be gifts for him to take home. In a zoom meeting, we chatted about expectations and rules (his parents were present) and I love that we are in the same page!

Join the thousands of families like Jana who open their home to a world of possibilities each school year, and say yes to hosting an exchange student!
