From Host Mom to Local Coordinator -

We always say that host parents make some of our best Local Coordinators, because they’ve experienced what it’s like to have an exchange student in their home and can guide first-time host families with compassion and support. Their excitement and enthusiasm for the program encourages those families who on the fence to say, “Let’s go for it!” This is exactly how host mom and Local Coordinator Stephanie Brown in Tennessee went from never having hosted before to now hosting and working with STS Foundation.

“My journey to hosting a foreign exchange student began when someone shared the profile of a young boy named Ignacio from Spain, who has celiac disease. Our daughter also has celiac disease, so I immediately felt that we could provide a safe environment for him and take care of his dietary needs while he was here on the program.

Hosting a foreign exchange student was honestly the last thing on our minds—we already have three kids of our own and a super busy life! When I mentioned the idea to my husband, I fully expected him to say no. To my surprise, he just had a few questions. Once we got those answered, we both looked at each other and said, ‘Let’s go for it.’

That was just one week before school started. We read Ignacio’s profile on a Sunday, and by the following Sunday, he was in our home.

We had an amazing year hosting Ignacio. We took him fishing, he rode on a jet ski, and he even played American football with our son. We made so many wonderful memories and developed such a strong bond with him.

As I began sharing our experience on social media, I started receiving lots of messages from people curious about hosting. I found myself answering questions, helping families, and eventually referring them to the program. That’s when I realized—I could actually do this! I became a Local Coordinator, and since then, I’ve placed 18 students.

I’ve loved working with these families, meeting new people, and watching friends of mine experience the joy of hosting, too. This year, we’re hosting a girl from Estonia named Elis, and we absolutely adore her.

I think the most important qualities for a host family are openness, patience, and understanding. These students are coming from the other side of the world to live with complete strangers—it takes courage, and they need that support and connection.

Over the past year, I’ve learned so much from working with exchange students—building relationships, discovering new cultures and traditions, and seeing the world through their eyes. It has truly been an amazing journey, and I love every bit of it.”

Whether you’ve hosted before, or just have an interest in bringing new cultures to your community, we invite you to join our team and become a part of the world of exchange! There’s no better time to join us as we work to build cultural bridges that help make the world a kinder, more understanding place.
