Her Host Family Changed Everything -

Each year, thousands of exchange students around the world arrive to the USA to experience what life is really like here in America. Their American host families play an integral role in making their lifelong dreams come true, and helping them adjust to life in a new country and culture. For Anusha from Suriname, this could not be more true. Her host family has not only embraced her with open arms, but has been there every step of the way as she learns each day what it’s like to live like an American teenager.

“My name is Anusha and being an exchange student has changed me a lot, in a good way of course.

I live in the northeastern side of Tennessee, and I still can’t believe I’m here. It feels unreal, it’s absolutely gorgeous out here. I was so excited to finally be here! My host mom has taught me a lot of things. I look at situations different now than I did before. I knew this exchange program was going to change me, I just didn't expect it to so soon. This experience has also taught me how to be independent, mentally strong, and that I should not be scared of whatever I want to do in life.

I wanted to become an exchange student because I just wanted to experience what being an American high school student would be like. The different food chains they have in the USA and just living a day in the life where you’re basically living a dream.

I got my placement information mid-July, which I was worried about, because then there would have been less of a chance for me to actually go to the USA. But when I got it, I couldn’t believe my eyes! I told my parents when they got home. I still remember that day as if it was yesterday, it was the happiest day ever. I couldn’t stop smiling and laughing and I was super excited.

I love my host family a lot, just like my actual parents and they are always there no matter what. I couldn’t have asked for anything better. My favorite thing about them is that they are very welcoming, you can just feel the love around you. I went to church for the first time and I liked it! I learned a lot of cool things to adapt better in my new community. My host mom made biscuits and gravy, the best food I have ever tried! I have honestly learned a lot from my host family, traditional holidays and how we celebrate them. I made my traditional dish for them and they loved it, I taught them how we celebrate our holidays, about my country and lots more. My favorite memories with my host family are probably when I first arrived, the smile on their faces and the posters. That’s when I told myself ‘this is it, I made it.’

Something that surprised me about being in the USA is that people actually follow the rules and laws. I was a bad eater before I came here, ever since I started eating really good, which surprised me because I would have never expected that from myself.

For any other students that consider being an exchange student in the USA, I would say do it! It’s the best thing I ever chose to do. You will get to experience tons of fun things here. You’ll never regret making this decision.”

Anusha’s story teaches us that no matter where you live, you have plenty to share with an exchange student! From biscuits and gravy to holiday traditions, there is so much to share and bond over when you host. Join the fun today!
