Hosting is a Two-Way Street -

You might think that hosting an exchange student is more than you can take on. Maybe you think you’re not adventurous enough, wealthy enough, or worldly enough. But you couldn’t be more mistaken! STS exchange students aren’t looking for a full-time tour guide, they are looking for a family. One to share daily life and holiday memories with. Check out our list below for things to do, see, and share with your exchange student that are not just fun but impactful for you and your family too!

Recipe Swapping
Challenge your cooking skills and try to make a favorite dish from their home country together – then teach them one of your classics!

Micro Adventures are Everywhere!
Day trips can be spontaneous, fun, and just the change of pace your family needs to feel refreshed about your own surroundings. Google some interesting sites within 2 hours of your house, pick one and hop in the car! Bonus points if you get outside in nature, move your bodies, learn something new, or find a place you didn’t even know existed before. All options are on the table: local museums, nature trails, quirkly landmarks etc.

Go to a Local Event You Usually Skip
You know that parade downtown you always say is corny? Get out there and embrace it! That fall festival with the sweet treats and  carnival rides?! Own the chaos, and the crowd and make it your new tradition. Trust us, it’s worth is for the corn dog/popcorn/churro/cider dinner that you only have once a year.

Watch Some American Classics- and Their Picks too!

Obviously in the age of streaming and constant media bombardment, many international students have seen the biggest blockbuster movies and shows. But do they know about that one from 1996 that you watched on VHS every weekend with your besties? Or that black and white holiday classic that makes you tear up inexplicably? And lets remember, as much as we have access to an abundance of foreign art in the US- there are also tons of shows and movies we would overlook or never have the opportunity to notice is someone didn’t point them out. (Fun fact: Australia makes great Soap Operas).

Let Them Teach You Something They’re Good At
You might be surprised at how fun it is to let your student take the lead on a family activity. So- step out of your comfort zone and your shoes- learn that TikTok trending dance, break out your long-forgotten soccer (football/futbol/footy?) skills and let your student challenge you to a family match. Or listen to their favorite band while they teach you all about how they mastered the chord progression for that one song and – really- you can too! It’s all about widening your view of the world.

Volunteer Together for a Local Cause
Meaningful action towards creating a better community for yourself and your neighbors will instill pride and confidence in you, your family, your friends, and your student. Who knows, this might open the flood gate to getting you involved in all types of passion projects. Check out food banks, animal shelters, and environmental clean up days. Every little bit helps. Many people doing one small thing adds up to a huge change.

Celebrate one of Their Cultural Holidays
Plant the seed that you want to learn about how they celebrate and let them go wild planning it! Encourage them to invite a few friends, embrace the theme, the food, and the customs. Creating opportunities for your student to feel proud of where they come from, and share their special occasions is something that will bond you all together and memories that will last a lifetime. Take a few pictures to document the occasion, you know their parents at home would love to see how fantastically their teen is representing their family traditions and culture!

Its obvious from this list that you don’t need a Pinterest approved itinerary or extravagant trips to create a unique and beautiful experience for your exchange student and your own family as well. The best host families are fostering connection through curiosity.
