Hosting is Easier Than You Think -
Study Abroad

We know life can feel chaotic—between work, school, sports, and family dinners, it might seem impossible to add one more thing to your schedule. But if that "one more thing" is the chance to host an exchange student, it might be one of the most meaningful decisions your family ever makes.

Becoming an exchange student host family doesn’t require you to be perfect, wealthy, or have tons of free time. It just takes a welcoming heart, a spare bed, and the desire to share your daily life with a student from another part of the world. Hosting is not only doable—it’s deeply rewarding.

By the end of this post, you’ll understand exactly how to become a host family and why tens of thousands of American families say yes to this life-changing opportunity every year.

What Does It Mean to Host an Exchange Student?

When you host an exchange student, you’re inviting a high school student from another country to become part of your family for 5–10 months. Together, you’ll share holidays, routines, local traditions, and everyday moments that become lifelong memories. As a host family, you’ll gain a new appreciation for your own community—and a new family member to love for life.

How to Become a Host Family in 7 Easy Steps

  1. Say Yes!

Click the “Get Started” button and fill out a short form. This lets us know you’re interested in becoming an exchange student host family and allows us to match you with an STS Foundation Local Coordinator in your area.

  1. Complete the Vetting Process

We’ll schedule a home visit and run a standard criminal background check to ensure a safe and supportive environment for the student. It’s the kind of thoughtful vetting you’d expect from a trusted program like STS Foundation.

  1. Get Matched With a Student

You’ll be able to review student profiles and choose someone who fits your family’s lifestyle and interests. Whether you’re a busy household, empty nesters, or anything in between, we’ll help you find the right fit.

  1. Orientation and Ongoing Support

Once matched, your STS Foundation Local Coordinator will walk you through everything you need to know. They’ll be available throughout the year for support, questions, and even to celebrate milestones with you!

  1. Prep the Room

You don’t need to create a luxury suite—just a cozy bed, a place to study, and a warm welcome.

  1. Welcome Week

Get ready to greet your student! Help them settle in, show them the basics (like how to use the washing machine!), and help them get ready for the start of school.

  1. Create a Simple Routine

You don’t need grand plans—just include your student in your everyday life. Dinners, family game nights, soccer practice, even chores… it all matters. And remember, teens need downtime too. Encourage your student to join clubs, make new American friends, and connect with their family back home when needed.

Hosting Is a Gift—And It’s Totally Doable

You don’t have to be a perfect family to host an exchange student. You just need to be real. The small moments—like helping with homework or showing them your favorite local diner—add up to a transformative experience for both of you.

So, if you’ve been wondering how to become a host family but thought you were too busy or unsure where to start—this is your sign. It’s easier than you think, and we’re here to walk with you every step of the way.

Fill out the form below to take the first step. We can’t wait to welcome you to the STS Foundation host family community!
