Is Hosting with a Toddler Possible? One Family’s Amazing Story -

At STS Foundation, we know inviting a family to host an exchange student is an honor. To take on the task of welcoming a new person into your heart and home can be daunting, but it is also worth it. Host mom Elizabeth Walker in Washington State shares how, even though she was nervous about hosting, she’s had an incredible experience so far with her student from Turkiye.

“Hosting an exchange student was always something that interested me. When I was a kid, we hosted some Japanese students in the summer, and a French student one summer. These were wonderful experiences that I still remember clearly and think of fondly.

Our Local Coordinator posted in a Facebook group a couple of years ago that they were looking for host families and I was immediately intrigued! Unfortunately, we were unable to host that year, but I remembered to reach out as soon as we were able. Our Coordinator was kind, helpful, and joyfully answered all our questions. At that point, we were sold on wanting to host.

The biggest concern I had with hosting was around our family makeup. We have a toddler. Do toddlers and teenagers mix well? Will a teenager be tolerant of a two-year-old? When we were talking with the Coordinator about what kind of student we wanted, the only things I was firm about were: having a girl and needing them to be okay to live with a toddler who was likely going to be all up in their business!

Our Coordinator searched through all the students and presented us with Pandora, a Turkish student who was on a grant, and our Coordinator was confident that she would be a good match. We were sold!

Before hosting, teenagers had honestly never appealed to me as an age group, and I was nervous about getting one who was going to be difficult to manage. Will she do her schoolwork without being nagged? Will she make friends? Will she respect our rules? All these concerns bubbled around in my head while we prepared to host, and I tried to remain optimistic about her.

Before she arrived, I made sure to fill our profile with information that made it clear our family included a toddler, and added pictures of him. We had a video chat over WhatsApp and she got to meet him. She had every chance to back out, but she did not! I have to admit, I was still nervous about her adjusting to life with a toddler.

We spent the rest of the spring/early summer getting her room ready and mentally preparing to have a teenager. When we finally met at the airport, it was such an incredible moment! It was like we were always meant to be family; all my concerns withered away.

In the next few days, it was a whirlwind of getting her set up with school and acclimated to a 10-hour time zone difference. But once she was in our home, it was like she’d always been there. Our toddler took to her as quickly as a toddler can, and much quicker than I expected. She’s proven herself to be tolerant, kind, respectful, and fun!

We have tried to give her a typical American family experience, which can be boring some days. Both my husband and I work full time; Pandora goes to school full time; and our toddler is at daycare full time. We make sure to eat dinner as a family every night and present her with different opportunities to learn about our state, city, and family.

My favorite memory with her, so far, is showing her the stars. She had never seen stars before. She comes from a large city, where the bright lights make it hard to see the stars in the night sky, and has not traveled much in her young life. My husband took her to the North Cascades to see the aurora borealis and she was amazed by the stars! Things we take for granted living in this part of the country!

Pandora is an incredible young lady and we feel so fortunate that we get to share life with her. If you are considering or have ever thought about hosting, I highly suggest to just do it. The experience is enriching. The other students who are in her group are great kids, too, and it’s fun to interact with them and learn about them and their cultures. It’s also fun to be a tourist in your own little part of the world. STS Foundation is also a great organization to work with and it’s been so easy. The Coordinator is always available if we need her and plans fun activities for the students to do each month. Overall, it’s been a truly wonderful experience!”

We are so thankful to have host parents like Elizabeth take the leap, and welcome an exchange student into their families, even when they’re a little nervous. The memories they make together are worth the nerves and questions you may experience before your student arrives! Who knows, you may end up not just showing a student your community, you may also show them the stars.
