How High School Exchange Students Make a Difference -

High school exchange students bring fresh perspectives, cultural diversity, and new energy to their host communities. But beyond just learning about a new country, many students also take the opportunity to give back. One such student is Milena from Armenia, who completed an impressive 72 hours of community service during her first semester in the U.S. through the Helping Hands Community Service Project. In this interview, Milena shares her experiences, memorable moments, and the personal growth she has gained through volunteering.

What inspired you to get involved in community service during your exchange year?

When I arrived in the USA, I knew that experiencing a new culture wasn’t just about observing—it was about participating and contributing. Volunteering felt like a great way to connect with people, make a difference, and experience American culture firsthand. So when I had the opportunity I started babysitting at church right after I arrived.

How did you find opportunities to volunteer in your local community?

My first volunteering experience happened almost immediately—I started babysitting at church every Sunday. From there, I looked for more ways to get involved. One of my friends introduced me to volunteering at a foster kids’ donation closet, where we helped put together outfits for children. I asked my host family for help to find volunteer work. Over time, I didn’t even realize how many hours I had completed—it just became something I enjoyed doing! I also just joined the Key Club at school, which will help me find even more opportunities.

Can you share some of the most memorable moments from your community service activities?

One of the most fun experiences was wearing a bear costume at an event. It was such a fun way to interact with people and bring smiles to their faces. Another memorable experience was helping at Mini Miracles Pediatric Therapy office, where I assisted with cleaning and organizing. It felt rewarding to know I was helping create a better environment for kids. And, of course, babysitting at church has been one of my favorite experiences—I loveee babies and I could tell that the babies really liked me, which made it even more special.

How has volunteering in the USA impacted you personally?

Volunteering has made me realize how much I enjoy being part of a community and contributing in different ways. It has also helped me build confidence, improve my communication skills, and feel more connected to people here. It reinforced my belief that small actions can make a big difference.

How do you think your work has positively impacted the community you served?

Even though my contributions might seem small, I believe they helped bring smiles, spread positivity, and support local initiatives. I believe that even small acts of service—whether it’s babysitting, cleaning, organizing, or just being present—can make a difference.

What advice would you give to other exchange students who want to get involved in community service?

Start small and follow what you enjoy! If you like working with kids, find opportunities at a school or church. If you like organizing, look for donation centers. Don’t be afraid to ask your host family, teachers, or friends for ideas. There are so many ways to help, and you’ll be surprised how quickly you become part of the community.

How do you plan to use what you’ve learned from this experience in your future?

This experience has shown me how rewarding it is to give back, and I definitely want to continue volunteering in the future. Whether in Armenia, Tennessee, or anywhere else, I’ll look for ways to support my community.

Milena’s dedication to service exemplifies the spirit of the Helping Hands Community Service Project. Her story is a reminder of the meaningful impact high school exchange students can have—not just by sharing their cultures, but by actively participating in and supporting their host communities. By stepping up, giving back, and making connections, students like Milena are helping build bridges between cultures and leaving a lasting mark on the communities that welcome them.
