How hosting gives students the true American experience -

Each year, thousands of everyday American families open their hearts and homes to students from around the world, giving these teens the chance to see what life is really like here in the USA. From Friday night football games to family dinners, host families have so much to offer exchange students. In return, students share their own culture through food, conversation, holidays, and more! For the Balliett family in Indiana, they found that every day was an adventure hosting Abe from Palestine.

“My name is Nicole and this past school year was my first time hosting an exchange student. I was always curious about it in the past, and finally decided to jump into it! My family was very eager as well. My husband is Jeremy and we have two amazing girls Leah (10) and Lillian (8) There were a lot of student biographies to look through before we chose. I wanted to make sure the student we were going to host would mesh into our family as best as possible. We were able to finally choose, and the one we decided on was Ibrahim (Abe for short) from Palestine. This young gentleman was a Kennedy-Lugar Youth Exchange and Study (YES) Program scholarship student. He has younger siblings at home (around the same age as our girls) which is one of the reasons we chose him.

We finally got to meet each other at the end of August 2024 when he arrived in the United States for the first time. This was the first time he had ever been out of his country. He was the sweetest boy, and my girls fell in love with their new big brother immediately. He started attending the high school that I teach at and integrated seamlessly. He was amazed that he was allowed to choose what classes he could take. In his country, they tell you what classes to take for your education and that is done. He decided to take as many science classes as possible! He wants to go to medical school eventually and become an ophthalmologist. He got involved in many of the clubs in school as well as music. He loved going to the sporting events and all of the different activities the different clubs sponsored. He devoted a lot of time for community service as well.

At home, he would always make me laugh. He and my husband would work together to pull pranks on me. He was so witty and had some of the best jokes I have ever heard. He loved to try new things, especially food! Jeremy is someone who likes to try lots of new foods and ideas, and Ibrahim was right there to help him test things out. Ibrahim would join in on games that we play together as a family like Uno, Monopoly, and many more. We would all watch movies together. I would try to show him all kinds of different movies that he had never seen before. We would go on walks together around the park near our house. We enjoyed evening walks. Ibrahim would even help the girls with homework if they were stuck while I was busy cooking dinner. Each week, we put together a menu of meals we wanted to make. We made sure everyone had input. Ibrahim was really good about helping to choose different meals that were different for us but more like home for him. He also helped prepare those meals as well.

All of the holidays together were so fun and full of love. I think around Labor Day, we got to go boating on a lake with my sister and her family. He got to experience riding on a tube behind the boat. He seemed to enjoy that! We all had fun with Halloween. We each did our own thing and Ibrahim chose to be the Lorax. He even went to school for the dress up day in the full orange body suit and yellow mustache! I think Halloween may have been his favorite holiday out of all that he was here for.

We live in Indiana, so it got really cold and ended up snowing a few times. He was not used to the cold and always had a heater running by him in the house. He loved the music at Christmas time and thought it was a nice holiday. I think he liked going sledding in the snow, but not for too long because it was so cold. Valentines’ Day was fun because when I got the little cards for my girls’ classmates, I got some for Ibrahim to make as well. He had so much fun writing different notes on them and passing them out to all of his friends. He even gave one to me, Jeremy, Leah, and Lillian.

I wanted to try to give him the best experience here in the US as possible for his short time. Our family is not very wealthy, but we were able to make things work here and there with small fun experiences. He got to try roller skating and ice skating. We went hiking to get outside and enjoy the beautiful scenery around us. He got to experience a drive-in movie, bowling, and carving pumpkins. We were able to go with a group of exchange students to see a Pacer’s game and an Indianapolis Indians baseball game. We got to celebrate his 17th birthday while he was here with us. He was an escort for Homecoming at school. He went to Prom and had so much fun dancing the night away! One of his top things he wanted to experience while he was here was a real concert. I was able to take him to Chicago to see the city and watch one of his favorite artists (The Weeknd). The last experience we were able to help give him was a short trip to Florida. It is about a 16-hour drive from where we live. He got to see the Atlantic Ocean and swim in it for the first time in his life!

The education he received while he was here will help him with his future plans of becoming a doctor. The fun and experiences we got to have together while he was here will be remembered for a long time. The experience of having him in our family will be loved and cherished forever. Lillian and Leah both fell in love with Abe and miss him every day. We will always have a place for Abe in our hearts, even if he is on the other side of the planet! I hope he is able to return to the US in the future for medical school.”
