Making a Difference Through Volunteering -

Giving back through volunteering and community service is an important part of American culture. Over a quarter of Americans volunteer and take part in community service activities annually, giving back to their neighbors, fellow Americans, and people around the world.

The Helping Hands Community Service Project was created to encourage STS Foundation exchange students to embrace the spirit of volunteerism and give back to the US communities that welcome them. As they travel back to their home countries at the end of the exchange year, students also take back with them this spirit of volunteerism and may go on to continue giving back long after they have left the United States.

Don’t just take our word for it, take it from Wajid from Pakistan. “Volunteering helped me grow as a person. It improved my confidence, communication skills, and sense of responsibility. Being in a new country can be challenging, but serving others helped me feel connected and gave me a sense of purpose. It gave me the sense that I’m part of the USA and I’m one of them! I plan to carry these lessons with me wherever I go. The values of responsibility, respect, and giving back will guide my future education and career. This experience has motivated me to stay involved in community service and continue making a positive impact. Once I go back to my country I would love to share this with everyone and it’s impact on me.”

Through the Helping Hands Community Service Project, exchange students are able to form deeper connections with their host communities. By volunteering, they learn the importance of helping others and how good it can feel to know they have made a positive impact in the lives of others. Whether they are taking care of the elderly, their fellow classmates, animals in the shelter, or the environment, they are making the world a better place to live.

In a world where it can sometimes be hard to feel connected to those around us, Milena from Armenia shares how she felt the impact she was making through volunteering. “Even though my contributions might seem small, I believe they helped bring smiles, spread positivity, and support local initiatives. I believe that even small acts of service—whether it’s babysitting, cleaning, organizing, or just being present—can make a difference.”

While we consider every act of community service a success, we are proud to share that we had the highest rate of participation for the 2025-2026 school year, and together, our exchange students completed nearly 1,500 hours of community service. The amount of lives impacted by their hard work is immeasurable. From volunteering at holiday events like Trunk or Treat and Toys for Tots, to helping bring beauty back to their communities through beach cleanups and removing invasive plants, students have left fingerprints on their host communities that will be seen long after they return to their home countries.
