My Host Mother: The Person My Life Needed -

Incredible host families come in all shapes and sizes, including single parents! The bond that student and host family create through their time together shows all of us that there’s never one “perfect family,” but rather, there’s a family that is perfect to their student. For Karla from Spain, her perfect host family was host mom Debbie from Missouri. She shares how Debbie was the person she didn’t know her life was missing.

“My name is Karla and I’m an exchange student living in southwestern Missouri. I want to share my experience with my host mother and how she has changed the way I see and treat things.

My host mother, Debbie, and I are the only ones who live at our house. I’m also the fifth student she hosted, but I’m the first from Spain.

Going into my exchange year, I didn’t have any expectations about the host family, because it doesn’t matter who you’re with since everyone that hosts is ready to have fun, learn, and welcome the student as one more of their family. And that is how it’s going with me! My experience here has been unforgettable, and it’s all thanks to Debbie.

We travel, we both love nature and being outdoors, and we also love laughing. I laugh A LOT. We talk about how different our countries are, about the problems that are around us, our opinions about things, and what we like. She tells me stories from when she was my age and it’s incredible how time has changed. She used to play basketball, volleyball, and softball, and now we don’t miss any of my high school’s games!

Every week, we do activities with Debbie’s family. She has two grandkids under two years old and I love spending time with them. She herself says that I’m like a big sister to them.

Thanks to my host mother, I have learned to love myself more and the opportunities that life gives people. Sometimes we complain about unimportant things or we don’t appreciate what we have until we lose it. Since I have been here, I have learned we are very fortunate for the life we have and we can’t lose it.”

Karla’s story once again shows us that the size of your family doesn’t matter because it’s all about the size of your heart. Hosting is so much more than welcoming a student into your home. It can be transformative, and the love you show exchange students can be life-changing for everyone involved. Join the thousands of families who make our students’ dreams come true, and say yes to the incredible adventure that is hosting!
