National Director Sees the Profound Impact of Exchange

When you join STS Foundation’s dedicated team, you quickly see how being part of student exchange has an impact on all of us. From students to host families, schools to team members, we all have something to learn from each other. For National Director Joan Formoso, her dedication to exchange has spanned decades, but she finds herself learning new things and finding more reasons to love exchange with each year. Here’s her story.

“During my recent trip to Washington state, my primary objective was to immerse myself in the environments of our scholarship students placed there. I had the opportunity to visit them both at school and in their homes, engaging with not only the students but also with school staff and host parents.

Each interaction was incredibly rewarding as I gained deeper insights into the lives of our students. It was heartening to hear firsthand how much they are relishing their experiences, although there was a palpable tinge of sadness as they realized their time on program is drawing to a close, with only four months remaining.

For me personally, this trip served as a poignant reminder of the profound impact of our work. Witnessing the positive transformations in the lives of our students, as well as the reciprocal enrichment experienced by host parents and the broader high school community, reaffirmed my passion for what we do. The connections forged during these experiences are enduring and truly invaluable, extending far beyond the duration of the program.

In sum, I can confidently say that I love what I do, and this trip further reinforced my dedication to our mission.”
