One Mom’s Journey to Hosting Again -

If you’ve never hosted an exchange student before, hosting can seem like a daunting task. In reality, hosting is easier than you think! Hosting is about opening your heart and home up to someone from a different culture, and welcoming them into your family and day-to-day life. When you join the fun and welcome an exchange student into your home, you may even turn out like Host Mom Christina, who had such a great time hosting that she decided to host again!

“One morning, I received a message from our future Regional Director, Renee, asking if I have ever hosted or if I have ever thought about hosting. I told her I would take the information at the least. This was a morning I had youth group, and one of the kids said that he wants to go to other countries and read them our Bible. I felt like this opportunity was brought upon us from God! After knowing the information and really thinking about it for a couple of hours it was very heavy on my heart that we were meant to do this. Next thing you know, we were matched with Kelvin from Germany! Once it was official, we started talking right away on the phone and FaceTime many times for at least an hour each time in the 2 weeks of waiting for him to get here!

We have 3 children of our own: Coen, 13, Lela, 4 , and Ezme, 2. Kelvin fit right in with all of us! All 4 kids got along great! Kelvin forever has a home here in America with us!! He is a great kid and we all had a wonderful experience. We are so, so very glad that we said yes!!

We have lots of stories we could share about Kelvin. One of the favorites is that the girls Lela and Ezme had a thing for taking Coen and Kelvin’s AirPods! These boys would put them down all over the place all the time and it was like an alarm went off for them and they would snatch them up quick and then it was a game getting them back!

We loved having Kelvin in our home so much that we are hosting again this year!! We started talk to our new student, Alvaro from Spain, before school was out and are excited to get to know him better.

For first-time host families, I would say, always lay the foundation down for the child as soon as they get there as to what’s expected! And then just treat them as you would your own. They have a good life in their home country, however this is the American dream we get to live, the life that so, so many others only dream about. How can you deny a child 10 months of that!?

Every child and experience is going to be different in its own way, so I think it’s important to be open-minded, with a welcoming home and heart! We want these kids to feel like this is their home and they are not a ‘visitor!’”

Join the thousands of families like Christina who open their home to a world of possibilities each school year, and say yes to hosting an exchange student!
