Rediscover Your Community Through Fresh Eyes -

Imagine strengthening your community, enriching local schools, broadening your family's horizons, and fostering international relations – all within just 10 months! You may not realize it, but your home and local community are a dream come true for an exchange student. Becoming a host family is a unique way of rediscovering your local community through the eyes of an exchange student for whom everything is new and exciting. Foreign exchange students are excited to share their food, language, and traditions with their host families, schoolmates, and everyone else they will meet along the way. Local Coordinator and Host Mom Jaime Moore shares stories from her hosting experiences, and how much she loves giving others the gift of exchange.

What’s a “first” that sticks out to you when you think about all the experiences your exchange students have had?

I've witnessed the joy of hosting firsthand – my family has hosted three international students so far! Noa, our first student, is from Catalonia in Spain. When her classmates found out that she had never had a Valentine's Day party, they threw her one complete with candy and an exchanging of Valentine's Day cards. As for a first for us, our family now has added a Catalonian Caga Tió to our Christmas traditions. The Tió is related to the tradition of the Christmas tree, and is also a bearer of gifts for little ones.

How has hosting allowed you to better appreciate your community?

Despite living in Northern Kentucky my whole life, I had never been to Natural Bridge. Our second student, Finn from Germany, requested to go as his last adventure before he returned home. It ended up being an amazing trip for our whole family. Hosting doesn’t require taking big trips. We have discovered so many wonderful things about our own local area that we would have otherwise overlooked.

What are some of the little things that have been a big deal for your exchange students?

Isabelle, our current student from the Netherlands, was so excited to Trick-or-Treat and hand out candy at Halloween, as well as experience Thanksgiving. (She plans on making Thanksgiving dinner a new tradition back home!) She absolutely adores frozen yogurt with all the toppings and Crumbl Cookies. Hosting doesn’t require grand gestures; it’s the little things that make a big difference.

How has hosting impacted your life?

I love the program so much that I became a local coordinator! That means that you have someone local to help you through the application process, choosing a student who has interests that match those of your family and then be there as a support system for you and the student for the entire time they are here. We welcome diverse families, including single parents, same-sex parents, and families with young children (exchange students make great older siblings!), teenagers or no children at home. Truly all types of families make wonderful host families!

Hosting an exchange student is more than just opening your home — it’s opening your heart to new cultures, unforgettable experiences, and lifelong connections. Whether it’s celebrating their first Halloween, sharing your family traditions, or seeing your community through their eyes, the impact of hosting is truly immeasurable. At STS Foundation, we believe every family has something special to offer. If you’re ready to make a difference in a young person’s life — and your own — we invite you to become a host family.
