The Difference a Host Family Makes -

When Sofia left Italy to spend a year in the United States, she knew she was about to begin an adventure. She felt the excitement so many exchange students describe—the anticipation of a new school, a new culture, and a new family she had only read about on paper.

What she didn’t know yet was just how much that host family would shape her entire experience.

From the moment Sofia arrived in Ann Arbor, Michigan, her host family welcomed her as one of their own. Not as a guest. Not as a visitor. But as a daughter and a sister.

And that made all the difference.

The Power of Feeling at Home

For many students, the biggest question before arrival is simple: Will I feel like I belong?

Sofia’s answer came quickly.

Her host parents and siblings included her in everyday life—sharing meals, conversations, laughter, and routines. They created an environment where she felt safe, supported, and truly seen. That sense of belonging became the foundation for everything else she experienced.

Because when a student feels at home, they’re able to grow.

Encouragement That Builds Confidence

Like many teenagers stepping into a new environment, Sofia faced moments of uncertainty. New school. New people. New activities.

But her host family didn’t let fear hold her back.

When her host brother joined the school’s cross-country team, they encouraged Sofia to try it too—even though it was something she had never done before. She said yes. And that one decision led to a full season of running, new friendships, and a sense of accomplishment she’ll carry with her long after this year ends.

She also joined her school’s Climbing Club—another first. Another leap outside her comfort zone.

That’s the impact of a host family: sometimes, it’s simply the gentle push a student needs to discover what they’re capable of.

Support Through the Ups and Downs

An exchange year isn’t just exciting—it can also be challenging.

There are moments of homesickness. Moments of adjustment. Moments when everything feels unfamiliar.

Sofia’s host family was there through it all.

They checked in on her. They showed patience and kindness when she missed home. They made space for her feelings while continuing to include her in their lives.

That steady support turned difficult moments into opportunities for resilience and growth.

Sharing Everyday Life—and Making It Meaningful

Some of Sofia’s favorite memories aren’t big, once-in-a-lifetime events. They’re the simple, everyday moments.

Trying new foods. Laughing over cultural differences. Talking about life in Italy versus life in the U.S.

Weekend trips became another highlight—exploring new cities, walking for hours, and enjoying time together as a family. These shared experiences didn’t just create memories; they built real, lasting connections.

That’s something many host families don’t always realize:
It’s not about planning something extraordinary.

It’s about inviting a student into your ordinary life—and that’s what makes it extraordinary for them.

A Lasting Impact

Looking back, Sofia describes her host family as a “second family.” She shares how they made her experience better than she ever could have imagined.

They helped her grow in confidence.
They helped her try new things.
They helped her feel at home in a completely new country.

And perhaps most importantly, they showed her what it means to be welcomed with open arms.
