Top 10 Reasons Midwest Families Make the Best Hosts -

There’s just something about the Midwest, right? The people seem nicer somehow. More open, polite, willing to wave at neighbors driving by, and check for packages on your porch when you’re out of town.

But, really… Midwesterners are a special group. They naturally make great host families and here are our top ten reasons we love them!

10. They love to talk about the weather. “Don’t like the weather here… wait 5 mins”. After snowy winters and stormy springs, you will never meet a group so grateful for the beautiful summer sun and colorful fall leaves. They make the most of their changing seasons and can adapt to any outdoor conditions. Snow day? Heat wave? Thunderstorm? Just an opportunity to bond.

9. They go ALL IN for holidays. Pumpkins, porch lights, and pies abound. Midwesterners have some of the best holiday season traditions and know how to celebrate with the whole community. Haunted Halloween corn maze, anyone?!

8. Speaking of traditions- they have a lot! County fairs, Friday football games, Cultural festivals, calling everything North of Chicago- “Up North” You will never run low on ways to engage with the community, local culture, and gorgeous environment in a Midwest host’s home.

7. They have cool colloquialisms like. “Ope!” or “Just gonna sneak right past ya” that are dripping in familiar kindness. They call soda “pop” and they use their hand as a map (lookin’ at you- Michigan!). Their energy and demeanor is welcoming and warm and we could go on and on about this over a bowl of puppy chow (IYKYK).

6. They have tons of options for activities in a few hours in any direction. Looking for a sunny beach day? Lake Michigan is huge enough to border Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois, and Indiana. They are close to some of the world’s best museums – The DIA in Detroit, The Field Museum in Chicago, The Walker Art center in Minneapolis, The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, The Nelson-Atkins Museum in Kansas City. And that is just the tip of the iceberg!

5. They are the epitome of American culture. Rooted in connection, warm and grounded, they are all about community support and shared traditions.

4. Their regional foods are iconic. You’ll want that Chicago deep dish pizza when you’re in Illinois, Cheese curds in Wisconsin, a coney dog in Michigan, or a comforting hotdish in Minnesota.

3. They are surrounded by history and important sites. Route 66 landmarks, Native American mounds, monuments of westward expansion like the Gateway Arch, the sounds of American music in the birthplace of Motown, Abraham Lincoln’s home and many important industrial cities that were key in America’s expansion and prosperity.

2. They celebrate high school sports like no other! Perfect for a visiting student athlete- they will be entrenched in pep rallies, marching bands, and school rivalries that will make for beautiful memories of their time here.

1. They are the homes in the “in between”. Not truly coastal, and not what some would consider flashy, with a different sweetness than the South. The Midwest is America’s Heartland for a reason, and we are thrilled to have so many amazing host families in the region!
