From Teacher to Local Coordinator -

At STS Foundation, our Local Coordinators come from all walks of life! Their experiences and skills help them as they support exchange students and host families throughout the school year. It’s probably no surprise that educators often make excellent Local Coordinators, given their love for young people and helping them grow. Local Coordinator Summer Nation shares how she first got to know exchange students in her classroom and Mississippi before joining the STS Foundation team to become an active part of cultural exchange.

How did you first learn about student exchange? What made you decide to become a Local Coordinator?

I’m a high school art teacher and I’ve had a few exchange students in my class over the years. The students have always interested me because they must be so brave to leave the safety of their own home countries and family to dive straight into a new culture, family, school, and, sometimes, a new language. I’m also drawn to these students because I love to travel. I love to talk to them about the differences and similarities between our countries. I’m the sponsor of the World Culture Club at our school and students love to share about the places their families come from. Students also love to hear about, but especially try, the food! My principal put out an email that they were looking for someone to be the local coordinator in our area. I thought it would be the perfect gig for me!

What have you learned so far from your experience as a Local Coordinator?

I’ve learned a few things so far. I’ve learned that even though these exchange students are brave travelers in a new world; they are still teenagers with the emotional ups and downs that go with that. To be a host family, you really need to consider what it is like for these students. You need to take the time to get to know them and really make them part of the family, for all that entails. Don’t overwhelm them, but don’t ignore them. They truly came here to share their experiences with us, and ours with them.

How has your time as a Local Coordinator been so far? What are you excited to share with your students and host families?

What I enjoy most as a Local Coordinator is seeing the students thrive. I love to see them share with other students information about their country, making food to share, and getting involved in school life. They aren’t all lucky enough to be hosted in a popular city, so you really must make the best of where you are.

Do you have any fun interactions with your students or host families that you’d like to share?

One of the exchange students I work with attends the school I teach at, so I am privy to a lot more of her life than the others. She sees this experience as an adventure and every day is “marvelous” in her opinion. She is an extremely talented artist and the artwork she has done while here is amazing. She presented to the World Culture Club about Italy, and the members loved the food she brought.

Whether you’re an educator or just someone curious about other cultures, we invite you to see what cultural exchange is all about and join our team! There’s no limit to what you will learn, and the lessons you’ll get to share with students from around the world.
