Last-Minute Decision Formed Lifelong Connections -

When faced with a decision, are you the type of person to analyze every option, weighing out pros and cons, or are you someone who jumps right into whatever feels right? Regardless of how you make the choice to host an exchange student, the outcome is often the same: a heartfelt connection is made between you and your exchange student that lasts long after they return home. For host mom Rica in Oklahoma, hosting was a quick decision that has led to giving her two young boys the older sister they never had!

How did you learn about hosting and what made you decide to host? I learned about hosting from a friend on Facebook. My husband and I have always been interested in learning about new cultures around the world, from how they live, celebrate holidays, and especially their foods! So, what a perfect opportunity to be able to experience that right in our home!

What drew you to Inge? Her interests were in common with ours. She also mentioned wanting to experience Christmas and Halloween here and I always go all out for those holidays, so I figured we would be a perfect host family!

Inge was matched with your family not long before getting on a plane to meet you in person. What was it like navigating that quick turn around and suddenly having a new person in your home? My first thought was that we are taking in someone’s baby, so as a mother myself, if the tables were turned, I would hope the host family would make my child feel welcomed, comfortable, and safe. So, when we figured out how long we had until she got here, I pretty much studied her profile to see her likes and interests. Once I gathered all the information, I made a welcome basket with home/school essentials, her favorite types of snacks, etc. I also had her mother send me photos from home and had them hung up all in her room so she felt that her room was her own!

How has the experience been so far and do you have any fun stories to share so far? Our time with Inge has been fantastic. We just celebrated Halloween and we all dressed up as characters from Peter Pan and Inge got to go trick or treating for the first time!

How has it been watching Inge and your little ones bond, and what is it like having a teenager in the home? Yes, my boys, 3- and 5-year-olds, absolutely adore her and all they ever talk about! She has quickly become a big sister figure for them! And having a teenager in the house is so fun. It’s like having a little best friend, she tells me everything about school, her life, and with a house full of boys it’s fun to shop for girl stuff and have someone to watch all the girly shows with!

How has Inge integrated into your family and how is life different with having her in your home? It truly makes you realize what all you actually have around you, seeing your everyday life through someone else’s eyes is so refreshing!

What would you say to a family who’s considering hosting but is still on the fence? Just do it. I’m a type that likes to just jump into opportunities when given because if I ponder on it too long, I will somehow psych myself out. We only live this one life, and as much as I dream to travel one day, it is expensive, so why not bring the cultural experience right into your own home and also get to change a child’s life and perspective of the country you call home.

Whether you’ve been thinking about hosting an exchange student for a long time, or only just learned about hosting through Rica’s story, we invite you to join the fun today! There’s no better way to welcome a new culture into your home, and give your family the gift of a new loved one.
